What does the word diet mean?  The differences of the definition of this word became evident in our offices the other day during a general discussion.  I think of the word diet as anything I tend to consume, while others think of the word diet as some specific plan on what they consume (Jenny Craig or some other plan).  Hmmm, so what is the definition of the word diet?  More so and most importantly-who’s right?

According to dictionary.com they define diet as: ” The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats”; Noun.  Wahooooooo, I was right!  In your face office gremlins!  Oh wait, dictionary.com is working against me since they further define diet as: “A special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons”.  Dang it and we’ll call this one a draw on who was right.  Moving on…

When discussing your diet with friends or family, especially if you mean weight loss, you may want to specify exactly what you mean by the word diet.  You tell me that you’re on a diet and I respond by inviting you over to our pizza night, could be met with some confusion.  Then you get upset with me for wrecking your diet, being unsupportive, etc….  Before beginning any weight loss diet, be sure you are setting a clear definition for yourself and what is allowable and when.  Having a plan, combined with a clear definition of the word diet, when partaking in a weight loss diet is the surest way to guarantee success.  You’re still invited for pizza night though.
