My Journey to Fitness (Decadent Friday Begins.)

Well I do not know about you , but all work and no play makes Alan a crabby SOB

To celebrate I am starting a new category on the blog.

Decadent Fridays!!!!

Anyone who is dieting needs a day off.

I talk to hundreds of people like you and me who are worried about their health. They diet hard for a while and then make a single mistake and beat themselves up for slipping. This is wrong you need a day off the routine. It does not kill you or completely mess up your diet to take a single day per week off and have a little fun.

If you do not get a day off you end up like me a crabby SOB and if you accidentally fall off the wagon for a day you feel terrible. I am here to say STOP take the Decadent Friday challenge and make this day the day you get to have a cupcake, or a beer, or a nice small portion of whatever your decadence is.

So Decadent Friday is the section of the blog where I plan on putting up posts and pictures of the DECADENT diet killing deserts and food I get to reward myself with for working out every day and eating healthy lunches and breakfasts.

I invite everyone to join in and email us at decadentfriday@myweightcare.com with your pictures and stories of how you reward yourself for doing well.

Today I am going to have cupcake number 33 from http://mingmakescupcakes.yolasite.com. My kids and I are going to bake them up and we are going to celebrate being good.

Hope you will join us in our decadence and I will post the results up daily so come back and see us.

The Magic Diet Bullet

Thursday, October 6, 2011 @ 11:10 AM
posted by

There is no magic bullet even though one of my companies sells product for weight loss that works but it really is only a temporary solution because you cannot stay on it forever without hurting yourself. Much like the studies of some of the more popular diets that remove carbs from your diet all together. Short term you probably will be o.k., but long term studies show it is really bad for you.

Our bodies were simply designed to be active and our systems were designed to eat when we were hungry and only until we are full. Not to stuff the entire pizza in our body because we do not want leftovers. No matter how much we want to we were not deigned to eat the world largest chicken fried steak……so the only REAL answer is a lifestyle change and that is the hardest one to do for most people.

It really is true it only take 30 days to make or break and habit and what I preach over and over is “do the work”. How do you know your winning or losing the lifestyle battle?

Remember that the more active you are the more fuel your body needs to keep from eating itself up. So as you work out you will find yourself even hungrier, but only eat until full. Use smaller portions eat and relax and wait to see if your full. It does take a while to get food from your mouth to your stomach and then to tell your brain your done. So slow and steady wins this race. If you slam a plate in your face in 5 minutes you will feel hungry afterwards and be tempted to continue eating more than you need.

I can say I went from super active all the time to behind the desk and now am working to get back into active all day. (yet here I am behind this computer LOL) I have only gained weight like this one time before and lost it all by just walking everywhere I went. But in Houston it is hotter than…well than anyone with some sense wants to go exercise in and right now a gym membership does not work for me.  So eating sensible, not just sitting in the chair all day at work and trying to keep active at night is helping me slowly win the lifestyle change.

Hopefully this helps you as much as it reminds me to keep “doing the work.”

Alan

Slow down to lose weight

Want to get faster results in your quest for weight loss?  Slow down…..  Come again?

Ok, it is decadent Friday and as such our one day of the week to enjoy some guilty pleasures.  Margarita’s are often the favorite guilty pleasure around here, but I have not started sipping on one…yet.  Yes, slow your workout down.

This is mentally a tough one to achieve sometimes as I go for my walk or spend some time in the gym.  There is always that ultra fit person with a negative body fat percentage passing me or doing more reps and laughing.  Ok, so their not actually laughing at my slower pace.  But they could be.

Slowing your workout down ensures that you are engaging your bodies ultimate fat burning zone, aerobic.  Going too fast can actually trigger your body to enter an anaerobic state, burning sugar in your bloodstream and leaving you starving following you workout.  When your body is in an anaerobic state, you’re not burning the fat off those problem areas.  To make matters worse, you’re so hungry after the workout you end up gorging on the first donut you see.  Slow it down.

Slowing your workout down also gives you another benefit, if you’re a full throttle workout enthusiasts like me.  Changing my workout speed also allows me to put my muscles in a confused state, thus burning more calories.  Try this; do 10-20 pushups at your normal pace.  Now do 10-20 pushups at a much slower pace, take up to 20 seconds for each rep.  How do you feel?  See the difference?

Slow it down and lose weight for the next 4 weeks.

Decadent Friday (Margarita)

Yeah,

This Friday was margarita day. I only had two no sugar lime margaritas. They were yummy and while I was there I had some world famous Mambo special rice. Shrimp, Chicken, and Pork.

Oh yeah been months since I had a margarita and two was just right.  So although I am working hard to drink my vitamin and protien shake in the morning, eat a sensible lunch and dinner all during the week I get one evening (usually after work) where we get to forget the diet and exercise routine and let go. So far it is working very well.

You really need to be able to be disciplined to make this work. If you cannot get off the wagon for a night and get back on the next day then this will be very hard. Yet if you have that problem then any diet will be a problem.

I know you can do it if I can so tell me how you do.

The big metabolism myth

Every fitness expert wannabe has advice proclaiming they know the secret way to turn your body into a fat blasting furnace. Yet if it were that simple, wouldn’t there be more cover models roaming around town?

The myths about boosting metabolism are everywhere, they’ve been repeated again and again from best-selling fitness books, popular magazines, and the latest supplements. You hear personal trainers and nutrition counselors reciting this same information, as well.

Should you believe it?

Here is the stone cold smack in the face for you: There are no magic tricks to boosting your metabolism.

At least when it comes to your resting metabolism, simply put it is the calories you burn when you’re not active.

Want to burn more fat, getting active will definitely rev things up temporarily, but thinking that all these other tricks you can employ are going to cause your body to burn a bunch of extra calories while you sleep or munch Twinkies or watch football is a myth.

Here’s the really crappy part, the act of getting in shape and, specifically, losing weight will cause your resting metabolism to go down. Kind of a vicious cycle, workout more to burn more calories, but while at rest you will most likely burn less as your body becomes more efficient. You have heard of the term yo-yo dieting, but should we be examining yo-yo activity? Workout a whole lot and then fall off the workout wagon, to only still have the increased appetite of an athlete and resting metabolism to match. A recipe for weight gain and more frustration in your quest to lose weight. Consistency could be the first goal you will need to achieve on the weight loss journey.

The lower your body weight, the lower your resting metabolism. Also, when you consistently push your body hard with physical exercise, it gets used to it; it gets more efficient. Almost like my body is working against me, isn’t it.

You body will not just get more efficient at doing the exercise, but at any kind of activity. Even while playing your Wii, you’ll burn fewer calories.

Myth: Adding muscle mass dramatically increases daily caloric burn

You may have heard that one pound of muscle will burn 50 calories a day just sitting doing nothing. If you gain 10 pounds of muscle, you would therefore gain an additional 500 calories per day metabolic boost just sitting around.

The best scientific research shows that muscle will burn an extra 6 calories per day, per pound of muscle. At least it’s better than the extra 2 calories per day, per pound fat will burn. So you do get an increase from muscle, but it’s not the end all solution touted by so many.

We will be exploring other big metabolism myths over the coming months.

My Fit Foods Tip of the Week – A Rainbow of Protection

A Rainbow of Protection

Of all the diet theories and nutrition books out there, almost everyone can agree with the statement, “Eat your fruits and vegetables!” But how many of us are really getting enough? From recent polls, most Americans are eating less than two to three servings a day. Recent research is showing us that the old “Five a Day” rule is really not enough and experts are suggesting much higher amounts, as much as 8 to 13 servings a day, depending on caloric intake.

The need for antioxidant protection is now greater than ever with our modern day food supply, stress levels, and the ever-mounting chemicals in our environment. To age well and reduce the free radical damage that affects every cell in the body, we must focus on getting a “rainbow of protection”. This means saturating our daily intake with a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits, antioxidant rich spices, and adding that extra edge with supplementation.

Examples of Fruits and Vegetables with High Antioxidant Levels:

Acai Berries Broccoli

Avocados Brussels Sprouts

Beets Cherries

Blueberries Cranberries

Blackberries Jalapenos

Red Grapes

Red Bell Peppers

Red Cabbage Tomatoes

Spinach Carrots

Examples of Spices with High Antioxidants Levels:

Cinnamon, Cayenne Pepper, Lemon Pepper, Ginger, Garlic, Cumin, Oregano, Rosemary, and Turmeric

My Fit Foods Supplements with High Antioxidants Levels:

Acai Berry

Vitamin C

Green Tea

Cinnamon

Weight Loss Products

Are all weight loss products the same?

There are hundreds of weight loss products on the market. With all of the hype, it’s impossible to tell what’s what. I decided to research this in order to compile a list of the most popular products and their effectiveness, in an effort to cut through all the hype and false information out there. The surprising thing I found is that once you look more closely, there are really only a handful of substances out there–including herbs, amino acids, enzymes, etc–that make up the ingredients in the vast majority of over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss products. They are just being sold under a lot of different names, with a big variety in price and marketing. So here is the list of products, which I hope you will find helpful.

Stimulants - by far the most popular category

Ephedra (Ma Huang)

This stimulant does work well for some things. Chinese herbalists use it to treat respiratory infections, and ephedrine (a derivative) is in most asthma medications and allergy pills because it has powerful bronchodilation properties. But as a weight loss aid this is not the way to go, even though this stimulant is probably the most common ingredient in all weight loss products. It is often combined with caffeine and aspirin, known as an E/C/A stack. This is basically like taking speed. (There is only a slight difference chemically between methamphetamine and ephedrine.) The idea is it suppresses appetite, thus leading to weight loss. But there are many side effects, such as irregular or accelerated heart rate, insomnia, elevated blood pressure, shortness of breath, seizures, etc. It is extremely misleading to label products with these stimulants “all natural” because then people think they must be harmless. Too much of this stuff can be very dangerous, even fatal, especially if you have high blood pressure or heart problems. (Ephedra is natural in the same sense that arsenic is also natural.) Even if stimulants like Ephedra do work for you temporarily, research has shown that you gain 100% of the weight back once you stop taking it.

Other Herbal Stimulants

The bottom line is that although stimulants can aid in minimizing caloric intake, the main effect is water loss, not real fat loss. Plus they are very addicting, yet extremely unhealthy to take long-term. Stimulants are not an effective way to boost metabolism either, no matter what the label says; exercise is much better at achieving this.

Guarana ****

Made from the seeds of a plant native to Brazil, this is a strong stimulant that has a high amount of caffeine. Side effects from guarana may include nausea, dizziness, insomnia, anxiousness, etc.

Yerba Maté (also known as Paraguay tea)

A strong central nervous system stimulant that acts very much like caffeine. It has not been proven to aid in weight loss but can cause high blood pressure, insomnia, and other side effects associated with stimulants.

Kola Nut

The seed kernel of a large African tree, this is the active ingredient in Coca Cola and contains caffeine.

Bitter Orange (Synephrine)

The active ingredient is called synephrine, which is similar to ephedrine.

Thermogenics

These products often contain stimulants such as ephedrine or caffeine (see description on previous page), but may also include other ingredients that can decrease fat absorption and/or increase muscle mass. (Some of these ingredients will be covered separately later in this article.) The claim is that thermogenics increase your metabolism, but the only proven and safe way to do this is through exercise.

Leptoprin (Anorex)

This product is made up primarily of the E/C/A stack of ephedra, caffeine and aspirin, and is not really different than many other so called thermagenic products on the market. However, this product sells like crazy, so I wanted to investigate. It’s main claim to fame is that it’s very expensive ($153/bottle). In fact, that seems to be the focus of the ad campaign for this product: it’s so costly that it must be good. Their TV commercials say things like’”it’s much too powerful for the casual dieter.” Refer to the section on stimulants as to why to stay away from products like this.

More “Miracle” Products

Chitosan
This is a derivative of chitin, which is a substance found in the shells of sea creatures such as shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. It cannot be digested and passes through your body without adding any calories. It is supposed to reduce fat absorption because its chemical nature makes it to bind with fatty foods, removing some of the fat from your body. However, studies have found it no more effective in weight loss than a placebo. And according to a study by HealthWatch, an independent watch-dog group, there was no measurable increase in the amount of fat excreted after taking this product. In addition, it may be dangerous, by inhibiting your body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients such as the fat-soluble vitamins A and D and certain phyto-chemicals found in vegetables and fruit.

CLA – Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This fatty acid is supposed to speed up fat metabolism and increase muscle mass. Not yet proven for weight loss, CLA can cause flatulence and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Chromium (GTF Chromium/Chromium Picolinate)  ****
This is a trace mineral that may help reduce sugar cravings and regulate appetite by stabilizing blood sugar levels. The evidence on chromium as a weight loss aid is still inconclusive, but some health practitioners do advocate it as part of an entire weight loss program. It won’t help you lose weight by itself, but if you take it along with changing your diet and adding exercise, it may be helpful. (Make sure to follow the recommended dosage, as an overdose of this mineral can lead to kidney damage.)

GLA – Gamma-Linolenic Acid
Found in evening primrose oil, GLA is an essential fatty acid advocated by some, such as nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, as helping to burn off extra calories and boost energy.

HCA – Hydroxycitric Acid ****
This is the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia, which is an evergreen tree from Southeast Asia. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, some data from animal studies suggest HCA may suppress appetite and the formation of fats and cholesterol in the liver.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)
This is supposed to help you lose weight by raising the levels of serotonin, which can influence eating behavior. The body turns the amino acid tryptophan into 5-HTP. (Tryptophan was banned by the FDA due to health risks.) 5-HTP can have bad interactions with certain drugs, and is harmful to women who are pregnant or nursing. It is not a good idea to take this substance without consulting your doctor first.

L-Carnitine
an amino acid claimed to help with weight loss by increasing energy and lean muscle mass. So far the jury is still out on this one.

Pyruvate (Pyruvic Acid)
This is a naturally occurring enzyme that forms in the body during digestion of carbohydrates and protein. Some products containing this ingredient claim that it is a natural alternative to Fen-phen (fenfluramine), but a report in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition claims such statements false and misleading. (Fen-phen was extremely popular, but banned by the FDA in 1997 due to heart problems developing in some people who took the product.) There has been at least one study where researchers found pyruvate no more effective than a placebo, and side effects can include intestinal distress, bloating, and diarrhea. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, “pyruvate does not cross easily from our blood into our cells, so even taking large amounts of it will have little or no effect in burning off of fat. At best, it is just another diet pill ‘miracle’ that will only slim down your wallet.”

PPA (Phenylpropanolamine)
Never proven effective in weight loss, PPA was banned in 2000 by the FDA from being sold without a prescription because it was deemed too dangerous. At the time it was the active ingredient in Dexatrim, Acutrim and several other OTC products. It can cause headaches, extreme spikes in blood pressure, stroke, and even death in some cases.

Herbal Diuretics
Very common in OTC weight loss products, diuretics can trick you into thinking you’re getting thinner, when all you are really doing is losing water weight. Herbal diuretics include hawthorn, dandelion, juniper seeds, horse tail, shave grass, and green tea. Most of these herbs are not toxic, but some can have bad interactions with prescription medications. And if you abuse these products, too much water loss will deplete your body of sodium and potassium. A much healthier way to achieve the same effect is to drink lots of purified water. You will lose excess water weight, hydrate your skin, and get other health benefits as well.

Other Herbs for Weight Loss

Bladderwrack

This is a kind of seaweed that contains a high amount of iodine, which may stimulate the thyroid. Unless you know you have an iodine deficiency, it is not a really good idea to take this.

St. John’s Wort\

Primarily used to fight depression, this herb has not been proven effective for weight loss and can actually be dangerous. If you take St. John’s wort, you need to avoid certain medications such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, and foods containing tyramine such as wine, cheese and aged meats.

White Willow Bark

This herb contains the active ingredient in aspirin. It may work for a headache, but it is not proven effective for weight loss.

Dietary Fiber
The idea behind taking products with dietary fiber is that they will make you feel full, so you supposedly eat less. They also aid in elimination, which can help with detoxification.

Pectin

This is a soluble fiber that occurs naturally in such fruits as apples, pears, and bananas. Pectin’s actual effect on appetite may vary for different people.

Guar Gum

A dietary fiber obtained from the Indian cluster bean, guar gum is used in many foods as a thickening agent. This fiber is supposed to make you feel full like pectin, but it can cause gastrointestinal disorders and fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

Glucomannan

Derived from the konjac root, it can absorb a great deal of water and thus promote a feeling of fullness.

Fenugreek Seeds

Contain 40% soluble fiber, which has the same effects as listed above. Fenugreek seeds may also reduce blood glucose levels.

My Fit Foods “Tip of the Week” - Glutamine: Muscle & Brain Food

Glutamine: Muscle & Brain Food

Most athletes and fitness enthusiasts are well aware of the benefits of glutamine supplementation, but the general population is not aware of the extra benefits glutamine provides such as gut and brain support. Glutamine can even be a remedy for those sugar and alcohol cravings that really mess with our healthy eating plan. This supplement is definitely not just for muscle heads or gym rats. Glutamine is actually the most abundant amino acid in our body with total body levels ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 mg. Think of glutamine as vital cell fuel with extra concentration in the brain, gut, liver, and muscle cells.

FUELING MUSCLE CELLS

Your muscle mass makes up 30 to 40% of your body. Improving muscle mass and fat ratios is crucial for healthy aging and a strong metabolism. Unfortunately, this is an uphill battle because as we age, we slowly and steadily lose muscle mass and gain fat. Dedication to resistance training, eating enough protein in meals every three to four hours, and supplementing with muscle fuel like glutamine are all imperative. Experts recommend at minimum 1,000 mg all the way up to 10,000 and 15,000 mg for intense training.

FUEL THE BRAIN AND CONTROL CRAVINGS

Glutamine is highly active in the brain. It can provide the raw material for both stimulating and calming neurotransmitters. Dr. Priscilla Slagle, the author of The Way Up from Down, uses glutamine supplementation any time she has patients that present problems with focus, mood, brain fog, or alertness. Glutamine also has the ability to balance blood sugar levels in the brain making it a wonderful remedy for sugar or alcohol cravings. Giving glutamine to rats decreased their voluntary alcohol consumption by 34%. It is hard to imagine rats drinking alcohol isn’t it? A quick fix remedy would be to take at least 1,000 mg on an empty stomach to kick a craving. Dr. Slagle recommends upwards of 4000 to 5000 mg for maximum brain fueling.

IMPROVE THE GUT

How healthy your digestive track is predicts all other aspects of your health. Housing 70% of your immune system, processing and breaking down all nutrients and building blocks of the body, producing 95% of your serotonin, and detoxing waste day after day are among the many jobs of the GI tract. Glutamine is used up by the gut lining at an incredible rate using up to 30% of your supply. Glutamine is the number one food source for the intestinal cells to make energy and repair themselves. Experts recommend maintenance doses of 1,000 mg to 3,000 mg but treatment for gut disorders are often from 6,000 mg to 10,000 mg.

Decadent Friday – Where are my Schweddy Balls?

Well I posted an article about the Ben and Jerry’s flavor “Schweddy Balls” ice cream and took a nice trip down to the local market to pick up a pint and voila! They did not have it.

After several trips to other stores, it would seem this flavor of ice cream is not available here yet. So why hype the launch and not make it available?

Anyway I did find a new flavor of Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream called “Late Night Snack” with chocolate covered potato chips. Needless to say I will not be buying this again anytime soon.

Also so the kids and I made flourless cupcakes with whipped cream frosting. Ming does cupcakes.com cupcake number 3. These were surprisingly good

There is no flour involved, only chocolate, butter, and eggs. They are extremely rich and I could only eat one….yeah that rich!

Has anyone been able to get their hands on Schweddy Balls yet?

My Fit Foods “Tip of the Week” -Supplement Special Cinnamon

Cinnamon

Antioxidant Power:

Cinnamon has an ORAC value of 267,536. That is higher than blueberries, turmeric, and the popular Acai berry. That means there is some heavy duty free radical fighting going on protecting our cells and repairing damage. Not to mention that when we up our antioxidants, we lower overall inflammation which helps everything including weight loss.

Blood Sugar Power:

A now almost famous study was conducted in 2003 that showed that 60 people with Type 2 Diabetes who ate 1 gram of cinnamon each day over a period of 40 days, experienced a significant decrease in their blood sugar levels, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. As everyone knows who has ever been through our 21 Day Challenge, controlling blood sugar is the key to burning fat and increasing energy.

Nutrient Packed:

Would you believe that a mere teaspoon of cinnamon contains 28 mg of calcium, almost 1 mg of iron, over a gram of fiber, and quite a lot of vitamins C, K, and manganese?

Other Benefits:

Cinnamon is also known for its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-clotting, and anti-inflammatory properties. Just an overall anti-sickness, anti-aging food!

Two capsules a day of My Fit Foods Cinnamon give you 1,000 mg or 1 gram.

Green Tea

Antioxidant Power:

Green Tea is made from steamed leaves that are minimally processed. The special class of antioxidants in green tea, polyphenols, contain antioxidant power from 25 to 100 times more powerful than Vitamin E and Vitamin C. This is where the true disease prevention of green tea lies.

Heart Health:

So many studies have been conducted on green tea that point to an amazing ability to protect the cardiovascular system. The take home message is that people that consumed green tea or green tea extracts had less strokes, better cholesterol, less high blood pressure, and fewer heart attacks. Again, the antioxidants in green tea are contributing towards lowered inflammation and preventing damage to the arterial walls.

Fat Burner:

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea increased thermogenesis (fat burning for energy) by up to 43%. Many other studies show that it can indeed support weight loss and raise metabolism with a healthy diet.

Other Benefits:

Green Tea contains the amino acid called L-theanine which has a calming effect on the nervous system. Other research has found that L-theanine also boosts T-cells strengthening the immune system.

Two capsules a day of My Fit Foods Green Tea provides 1,000 mg of green tea extract. Note that this is extremely high quality with 30% EGCG and 65% Polyphenol Catechins, which are the active antioxidants that have been so extensively researched.

Hope you are having a healthy week! Be sure to stock up on two amazing antioxidants along with all the healthy meals you need to make next week a successful one!
